Hey everybody, I just wanted to post a message giving you some more info on our new line of consoles what will be released in the next couple months. First of all I'll give you some details on the initial console in the line, what it is, and what it does. The first console in the exploration line is a lighting console designed to vastly simplify the process of controlling intelligent fixtures. It offers many features that make it possible to run a lighting show using intelligents with little or no pre-programming. The initial release offers control of up to 288 channels of intelligent fixtures. It offers live effects that can be applied to any or all of the selected fixtures, live one click color selection, and one click gobo selection as well. It also offers Focus Points to allow you to instantly aim any or all of your fixtures at predefined points. This console also offers 224 channels of control for conventional fixtures, each controlled by an individual mini-fader (or via submasters) so that you have instant access to each and every channel. It also has 32 submasters to assign channels to for easier live control. I think I'll take a few minutes and go a little bit more in depth on a few of the features we are offering.
Dual Effect Engines:
This release is offering two separate effect engines for controlling fixtures. One is a conventional step based system used for effect cues on the cuelist, and the other is a very intuitive timeline based system for programming live effects. As one of the designers of this, even I didn't realize how amazingly simple the timeline approach would make programming in effects, but I was blown away the first time I sat down with it and started putting together a show with it. This isn't to say that the step based system isn't great as well because it is extremely easy to use and very quick to write cues with, especially if you are used to something like the ETC Express/Expression lines (good consoles, just slow to program). The live effects are actually saved as individual plug-ins. A whole list of them will be provided with the release, but we will also set up a system to allow users to supply us with effects that they have made and we will make them available for free to all the users of this console.
Focus Points
As simple as a concept as focus points are, in my opinion they are one of the coolest features in this console. Here's why... Focus points initially allow you to define a position for each one of your fixtures to hit at the click of a button. When running a live show, this in itself is great, but it doesn't even begin to grasp the potential of focus points. We have designed our cue list features in such a way as to utilize focus points if the user desires to do so. What this allows you to do is to program your whole show with absolutely no knowledge of the stage you will be using for the show. You simply assign all your focus points to random values, and name them for where they will be hitting. For instance, drums, guitar, bass, crowd, ceiling, whatever... You save all of your cues using these focus points, you show up on the day of the show, plug in the console, and simply aim the fixtures at the appropriate area, and update the focus points. All of the cues you recorded before you even showed up will instantly be updated with these new values, and your lighting show will be ready to go! Also, how many times has this happened to you ? You design your lighting show and then suddenly someone decides that the guitarist needs to move 6 feet to the left. Now all of your cues that were hitting that area need to be fixed. This used to be a huge problem, but now all that you need to do is update one focus point, and all of your cues are fixed. These are the reasons that I am so fond of Focus Points.
One Click Color & Gobo Selection:
As simple as it is this has been a favorite at our test sites. In the fixture profile used when you patch a fixture, each color and gobo that the fixture supports is recorded with its value. Now as you are running a show if you want to change colors to red, all you have to do is click the red button and the color changes to match regardless of the value that the color is at in the color wheel of the individual fixture. It works exactly the same with gobos. This always seems to bring a smile to the face of those using consoles that require 10 keystrokes and looking at a color reference chart to change the color of one fixture.
There's so much more to talk about, but at the risk of turning this into a novel I'll go ahead and wrap it up. One last thing that I wanted to say is that this console is sticking with our commitment to provide great equipment at a truly affordable price. The initial price thats been tossed around is $200 (not firm yet). This is a fifth of the price of the cheapest intelligent lighting controller we could find (which we've used by the way and it was a piece of garbage) If you have any questions go ahead and ask and I'll do my best to answer.
